Section 2-2

The "Bankruptcy" of the Material Enterprise

The first historical force is the widespread disillusionment with the promises of materialism, driven by what “One Common Faith” calls “the bankruptcy of the materialist enterprise itself”.
  1. The “materialist enterprise” as the current capitalist system practiced in liberal democracies. The text broadens this perspective to include the full range of socio-economic experiments that manifested themselves in the twentieth century.
  2. While there were considerable and important differences between these systems, each derives “their moral and intellectual thrust from the same limited conception of reality”.
  3. It is essential to take a closer look at the present-day culture created by “materialism’s gospel of human betterment”.
  4. There is a vast difference between "material development" and the "materialist world view".
